CARROLL, PAUL M.

Paul Milburn Carroll died of natural causes April 2, 2015 at Frederick Memorial Hospital with loving family present. He was born August 6, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois to Joseph and Dorothy Deeks Carroll. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, George Deeks Carroll and Douglas Carroll and their respective spouses, Marguerite and Alice. He is survived by his wife of more than 65 years, Rachel Morrison Carroll, three children, John Morrison Carroll (wife Barbara), George Douglas Carroll (wife Deborah) and Lois Carroll Feller (husband Roland), nine nieces and nephews, seven grandchildren J. Matthew and David Carroll, Sara Escobar, Virginia Carroll, Lois Hogue, and Katherine and Miriam Feller, as well as 15 great-grandchildren. After serving in the Marine First Raider [Battalion] in World War II in the Pacific Theater, Paul studied at Georgetown University and graduated with a master’s degree in Russian History. He then worked as a research analyst with the National Security Agency for over 30 years. He and Rachel raised their family in Rockville, MD where he was active in coaching in the city baseball and basketball leagues. He loved spending his free time with his wife and family, camping, fishing, enjoying the natural world and gardening. Paul and Rachel moved to Charlestown, New Hampshire in 1985, where they became active members of the Charlestown Unitarian Church. Paul’s regular letters to the editor of the Eagle-Times newspaper in support of democratic and progressive causes were a true community enhancement. In 2007 they moved to Frederick, Maryland to be closer to family. Paul’s greatest legacy is in the love, kindness, and generosity he exhibited habitually toward all his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a kind and generous donation in his honor to a charity of your choosing. A memorial service for Paul will be held tentatively in early June.
