SEBOCK, JOSEPH

Military funeral services will be held this morning for Joseph Sebock, Harvey’s most-decorated World War II hero, who died Sunday, July 12 [1970] at the Veterans Administration Research Hospital in Chicago.

The Rev. L. J. F. Stuckwisch will officiate at the 11 a.m. services at the W. E. Kerr Chapel in Harvey. Interment will be at Cedar Park Cemetery. Members of his VFW post stood honor guard for him at the chapel Tuesday and Wednesday.

Born September 8, 1919, in Butler, Penn., Mr. Sebock had lived in Harvey for 45 years. He was a member of VFW Post 1759, Harvey, and served as “Americanism” officer for the past few years.

As a personal aide to Major General C. T. Clement, commandant of the Sixth Marine Division, during World War II, Mr. Sebock won the coveted Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and nine Presidential Citations.

On May 10 of this year, more than 300 Harvey citizens attended a banquet sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars, South Suburban Post 1759, at the Polish Legion of American Veterans hall in Harvey to honor Sebock, who was named “Citizen of the Year” by the Harvey city council. He also received the “Award of Merit” from the post. Six members of the U.S. Marine Raider Association, Sebock’s unit during World War II, were present at the dinner.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; two daughters, Mrs. Joe Constanzo of Cicero and Miss Stephanie Sebock of Harvey; a step-daughter, Mrs. Dave Warnaar of Florida; two step-sons, Gerald Schnuckel of Oak Forest and Dave Schnuckel of Harvey; three sisters, Catherine Fouts of Harvey, Ann Schmid of Harvey and Josephine Kastelon of Detroit, three brothers, Michael of Harvey, Nick of Markham and John of Harvey; and five grandchildren.
