Memorial services for Harold R. “Jeff” Metcalf, a retired University of Chicago administrator and former bar owner. ”He was not only the dean of students, but also the dean for students,” said Wayne Johnson, a colleague. “Jeff’s main working venue was the lobby of the business school. His approach was one-on-one. If a sudent needed help, advice or a way out of a problem, he was often the one who provided it. He played a major role initiating the business school’s minority scholarship program, the first in the nation for a major business school.”

During World War II, Mr. Metcalf served in Carlson’s Raiders, an elite U.S. Marine Corps combat unit.

He earned a master’s degree in history from the U. of C. in 1953.

After serving as assistant dean and assistant director of the business school’s downtown program, he became dean of students for the Graduate School of Business in 1956 and held that position until 1976.

As athletic director, he helped refurbish Henry Crown Field House.

From 1972 to 1981 and from 1986 until 1993, he was a member of the board of governors of International House, a residential and program center for foreign students.

A fundraising campaign is being undertaken to name the lobby of the Graduate School of Business’s new downtown center in his honor.
