SMITHERMAN, HAROLD B.

LAS VEGAS, NV – Harold Boyd Smitherman, 73, a longtime and former resident of Shreveport died May 16, 1994 in Las Vegas, NV. He was born October 4, 1920 in Liberty Hill, La. To the late C. Boyd Smitherman and Hannah Swanson Smitherman. Mr. Smitherman was educated at C. E. Byrd High School and Centenary College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served in Carlson’s Raider Battalion in the battles of Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Iwo Jima. He was decorated with two Purple Hearts. He was employed as a special agent for the Internal Revenue Service, was the first city auditor in Shreveport and was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Austin Smitherman; one son, Greg Smitherman and daughter-in-law Jeannie Smitherman; daughter, Jill Smitherman Raatz; grandchildren, Christopher, Brad and Rebekah; brothers, Robert Swanson Smitherman, Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Charles Smitherman, Houston, Texas and David Smitherman, Baton Rouge, La.

Interment was at Valley View Cemetery in Las Vegas.

His life was spent in serving his country, church, community, family and friends. We are grateful for our time with him. The family requests memorials be made to St. Paul Episcopal Church, American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
