YOUNG, DONALD E.

Corporal Donald Eugene Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Young, 416 N. Lumber St., has been killed in action [November 2, 1943] in an unrevealed locality, according to word received yesterday by his parents from the commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, Lieutenant General Holcomb.

Corporal Young was born in Allentown, Sept. 2, 1923, and he was graduated from Central Junior High School. He attended Allentown High School for three years, and on Aug. 20, 1941, he enlisted in the Marine Corps at the recruiting station at the Allentown Post Office.

He was 17 years old at the time, and his father went with him to sign the necessary papers. After receiving his boot training at Parris Island, S.C., he was transferred to New River, N.C., for advanced training. In August of 1942 he went overseas, and took part in battles on Guadalcanal Island, and in other engagements in the Solomons area.

The last letter received by his parents arrived Nov. 5, and while it did not disclose his station, his parents believe that he was serving with the Marines on Bougainville Island.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. While in high school he played basketball and baseball, and took a keen interest in dancing.

Mr. Young, a veteran of World War I, served in France for two years, as a litter carrier in the Medical Corps. He was in the battles of St. Mihiel, Argonne Forest and Chateau-Thierry.

The young Marine is survived by his parents, and a brother, Russell, at home.
