WYGAL, EDWARD R.

Full military services were held yesterday for [Navy Cross] recipient Edward R. Wygal, 69, of Chino who died January 24 [1983] at the Park Place Convalescent Hospital in Pomona. Interment was at Forest Lawn Covina.

Mr. Wygal was born March 14, 1913 in Casper, Wy. As a member of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, he was awarded…the Navy Cross. While stationed as a corporal in the Makin Islands during the war, Mr. Wygal’s [machine gun squad] was pinned down by the Japanese. He single-handedly sneaked around the enemy position and destroyed their encampment. He was also awarded numerous other honors during the war, including the Purple Heart and the Navy’s Dolphin Award.

Following the war, he was employed as a tool and die maker with Van Ordt Manufacturing. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans Ontario-Montclair Chapter 88 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Chino Post 1784.

He is survived by his wife, Theatta and a son, Charles, both of Chino; two sisters, Eva O’Toole and Helen Harless of Iowa and two brothers, Francis of Riverside and Fred of Idaho.

The services were conducted under the auspices of DAV Chapter 88 and VFW Post 1784, along with a Marine Corps color guard from Pasadena.

Memorial contributions to DAV or VFW are preferred. Arrangements were handled by Griffith Mortuary.
