WOOD, JAY C.

Junior Culver “Jay” Wood, 88, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.

Jay was born December 16, 1920 to Samuel E. and Grace Bell Culver Wood. Following his education, he served his country during WWII with the U.S. Marines and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He was very proud of his U.S. Marine Corps service. He was honorably discharged.

For many years after his discharge, he did search and rescue in Southern California. He moved to Florida and worked for the U.S. Postal Service and as a photographer and later was employed as a photographer for KCMT (later KCCO) TV in Alexandria.

Some of his hobbies included reading Western novels, traveling by his collection of National Geographics, and calling bingo numbers at Bethany Home for a long period of time.

He was first licensed as a ham radio operator in the 1930s and was a lifetime member of RARC. Jay was instrumental in starting the Saturday coffee meetings of the Runestone Radio Club, which were held at the Brass Lantern with other area and local ham operators. He enjoyed taking rides to Watertown, Fergus Falls and other communities for hamfests and conventions.

He will be long remembered for his organizational skills, his wit and T-shirts.

Jay was preceded in death by his parents; his wife and toddler; two brothers and a sister.

Burial will be at Fort Snelling Cemetery in Minneapolis.
