WILLIAMS, LEONARD E.

Platoon Sgt. Leonard E. Williams, U.S. Marine Corps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mack Williams, and husband of Mrs. Ettie Gollott Williams, enlisted in the Marine Corps June 16, 1938, and left for Parris Island, SC, where he received his basic training, maneuvering in the tropics at Puerto Rico and Cuba. Returning from Cuba he spent a short furlough in Biloxi with his parents and friends. During his furlough from Quantico, Va., he married Miss Ettie Gollott on April 19, 1941, she returning to Quantico with him. He was later transferred to San Diego, Calif., his wife joining him there. In July, 1942, he went into the South Pacific, and within six months he was in battle at Guadalcanal. After the battle of Guadalcanal he received a short rest and was then called for the invasion of Tarawa where he was killed [November 22, 1943]. He is survived by his father and mother, his wife and son “Skipper,” two brothers, Gy. Sgt. James Elvin Williams, Marine Corps, and Mack Anthony, age 7. His parents reside at 1624 East Howard Avenue, Biloxi.
