WHITTLESEY, FRANK R.
F. Russell Whittlesey of New York, grandson and namesake of the late Frank R. Whittlesey, prominent General Electric Company executive of this city, has been killed in action [September 14, 1942] in the Pacific, presumably in the Solomon Islands.
He was participating as a private in the U.S. Marine Corps commandos when he met death. Details of his action in the battle are not yet known to his family.
Pvt. Whittlesey was a nephew of the late Lieut. Col. Charles Whittlesey, commander of the Lost Battalion in France in the First World War. His father, M. M. Whittlesey, left Pittsfield a number of years ago. In 1935 he became a partner of the Wall Street brokerage firm of Joseph Walker & Sons.
Pvt. Whittlesey left Yale University to join the Marine Corps as a volunteer.
