WHISENHUNT, ELTON
Elton Whisenhunt, 75, died Saturday, April 19, 1997, at the North Mississippi Medical Center. He was a staff writer for the Houston Press from 1948 to 1950 and the Memphis Press-Scimitar from 1950 to 1965. He was president of the Newspaper Guild of Memphis from 1959 to 1961. He served as Memphis correspondent for Billboard Magazine for 12 years and as their Nashville editor/writer in 1965 and 1966. After leaving Billboard Magazine, he became public relations director for Wallace E. Johnson, then president of Holiday Inns Inc. for Wallace E. Johnson Enterprises Inc. From 1975 until his retirement in 1993, he operated a quick print shop in Memphis. During World War II, he was a member of the First Marine Raider Battalion and a member of Edson’s Raiders.
Services and burial will be private. W.E. Pegues Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include one son, Thomas S. Whisenhunt of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two daughters, Carol Molder of Memphis and Linda Mathis of Tupelo.
