WARD, JAMES J.

Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Ward of Gilman were in Brooklyn recently and had a visit with Harold Keller, a U.S. Marine who was with Mr. and Mrs. Ward’s son James at the time of his death [November 8, 1943] in the South Pacific. In fact, the two boys had been together since entering the service.

At the time James was killed there were eight in the squad who were guarding a mountain pass, when they were struck by a Jap mortar shell. All of the boys were injured but James was the only one killed. Since that time Mr. Keller has been in a hospital in New Zealand until released for a 30-day furlough. Mr. and Mrs. Ward feel a great satisfaction in having had the detailed information concerning their son up to the time of his death.
