TOTH, SHERMAN B.

Retired Sgt. Maj. Sherman Benjamin Toth (Sarge), 92, of New Berlin, WI peacefully died December 23, 2017. He was preceded in death by his wife Rita and daughter Christa. Sarge is survived by his children, his many grandchildren, and his several great grandchildren.

Sarge was born August 29, 1925 in Cherryvale, KS to Toby and Maddie Toth. Growing up in Bartlesville, OK he spent his days working on the farm, hunting and fishing, playing football, and riding horses. He joined the Marine Corps on his seventeenth birthday and served as one of the original Marine Raiders in the Pacific Theater of WWII. He and the Raiders made several beachheads during the war, including Guadalcanal, Guam, and Okinawa, that were crucial to the Allied victory.

After WWII Sarge left the Marine Corps and joined the United States Army, where he served for over twenty years, including in the Korean War, and retired with the rank of sergeant major. Following his career in the Army, he worked for the United States Post Office for several years. His life was dedicated to service of his country and to the service of others.

Sarge loved to hunt, fish, run his dogs, and spend time with his family. To know him was to love him, and he impacted everyone he met.

Visitation at Krause Funeral Home, 12401 West National Avenue, New Berlin, Wisconsin, Friday, December 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation at Krause Funeral Home Saturday, December 30 from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at 10 a.m. Procession to St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery for Military Honors immediately following.
