TOON, JOHN E.
John E. Toon, GySgt USMC (Retired), age 97, passed away on May 2, 2013. He was born in Malone, Texas, the son of a farmer. He left Texas and farming in 1940 and moved to San Francisco, where he worked as a streetcar motorman. Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 he returned to Texas to spend Christmas at home, and then went to Dallas to enlist in the Marine Corps on December 31, 1941, where he proudly served for 20 years. He was a WWII Marine Raider (A Company, Second Battalion, Carlson’s Raiders), and also served in Korea. After retiring from the Marine Corps he worked as a floor manager for Sav-On Drug, until finally retiring in 1984.
He is survived by his three daughters: Charlotte Hooker (Michael), Cheryl Rains, and Cathy Toon; two grandchildren: Stephanie Hooker and Joshua Hooker; and a big, loving Texas family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Cynthia; parents, George Elbert and Johnnie Lee Toon; brother, Manning Toon; sister, Glenn Scott; sister, Avonne Frazier; and brother, Ralph W. Toon.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Fairhaven Memorial Park & Mortuary, Santa Ana, CA, in the Rose Window Chapel.
