TANNER, KARL L.

Marine Capt. Karl Tanner, about 35, former Abilenian and son of K. B. Tanner of Eastland, has been killed in action [March 9, 1945] on Iwo Jima, Abilene friends have learned.

Former claims manager in the Abilene office of Texas Employers Insurance Association, Captain Tanner left here to enter the Army early in the war. He was stationed at Camp Bowie when the post was first opened. Discharged from the Army, he entered the Marines and had been overseas about three years.

Captain Tanner was a Marine Raider and had participated in a number of the South Pacific battles.

A half-brother, Sgt. Boyd Tanner of the Royal Canadian Air Force, was killed on his third mission over France.

The two Tanner sons and their sister were graduates of the University of Texas.

Their father, resident of Eastland since 1919, is city manager there.
