SWETLAND, FRANK S.
Sgt. Frank S. Swetland, 28, husband of Mrs. Robbye Rainey Swetland, 106 Park Circle, has died [July 24, 1944] of wounds received in action in the Pacific, his wife was notified yesterday.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Swetland, 5104 Delaware Avenue, Sergeant Swetland was a native of Nashville and a graduate of Hume-Fogg High School, where he played football. Before enlisting in the Marines in September, 1942, he was employed by the U.S. Engineers here.
He received his basic training at the Marine base, San Diego, Cal., and advanced training at Camp Joseph H. Pendleton, Oceanside, Cal., and went overseas in February, 1943. In September, 1943, Sergeant Swetland was mentioned in dispatches for his accurate grenade throwing, which accounted for at least six Japs in the Marine raid at Viru Harbor on July 1, 1943.
