STAHLECKER, DUMOND D.

HARLOWTON, March 30.—(Special)—Memorial services for Cpl. Dumond Stahlecker, who was killed in action on Iwo Jima, Feb. 20 [1945], were conducted at the Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. O. F. Wagner officiating. Members of Wheatland Post No. 15, American Legion, acted as color bearers and D. E. Perkins presented a flag to Cpl. Franklin Stahlecker, a brother of the deceased.

Stahlecker was a member of the famed Marine Raiders in the Guadalcanal and Bougainville campaigns.and was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations in the South Pacific.

Dumond Donald Stahlecker was born April 11, 1923, at Delmont, S.D. He came to Montana with his parents Feb. 19, 1925, and attended school in Harlowton. He was a member of the National Guard and CCC for nine months, and enlisted in the Marine Corps in his senior year at Harlowton High School.

Dumond was sent to San Diego, Calif., for training and was one of 1,000 picked from 7,000 volunteers for the 2nd Marine Raiders under Col. Evans Carlson. He spent 22 months overseas, taking part in the battles of Midway and the Solomon Islands.

In February, 1944, he spent 21 days visiting at home on furlough. After six months at Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif., he was attached to the Fifth Marine Division and again went overseas, being stationed in the Hawaiian Islands until early in February.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Stahlecker of Milltown and formerly of Harlowton, and four brothers, Franklin, stationed at Fort Monmouth, N.J., Norman, Howard, and Edmund and one sister, Cecile, all of Milltown.
