Funeral services for Marine Corps Sergeant William Monroe Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude E. Smith of Maricopa, who was killed on Okinawa Island, May 20, 1945, will be held in the Bonham Brothers Mortuary Chapel in San Diego at 1 p.m. April 5. A military burial will be accorded the deceased In Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Smith was born In Oklahoma in 1923 and moved to Maricopa at an early age. He attended Maricopa High School and graduated as president of his class. He was active in local sports activities until his enlistment the Marine Corps in 1941. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal while serving with the Fourth Marine Raiders attached to the Sixth Division in the Pacific Theater.
