SMITH, GEORGE S.
George S. Smith, 88, of Lancaster, PA, passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy.
He was the husband of the late Dorothy T. Hart Smith. Born in Penbrook, PA, he was the son of the late Jeremiah and Helen M. Clark Smith.
George had worked as a forklift operator for Kerr Glass for 16 years. He had also delivered beauty supplies for Kresge’s and in years past he had tended bar at the Washington House and the Dirty Old Tavern.
A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, George served as a private first class in the Pacific with Edson’s Raiders of the First Marine Raider Battalion, said to be the first U.S. special operations forces.
An outdoorsman, George liked to fish and hunt, and enjoyed NASCAR racing. He was a member of American Legion Post 34 and the Eighth Ward Club.
He is survived by his brother, Robert A. Smith of El Paso, TX.
