HENRY – Ivan Duane Shurts, 95, of Henry died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, at 12:55 a.m. at St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon.
Visitation was Sept. 4, 2015, at Calvert & Johnson Memorial Home, 513 Carroll St., Henry. Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Henry. Father Tom Mizeur will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Henry, where full military rites will be accorded by the Henry American Legion.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church of St. John XXIII Parish in Henry, St. Joseph Nursing Home in Lacon or the American Heart Association.
Duane was born Aug. 30, 1920, in Pekin, Ill., to Ivan Grant and Isla (Owen) Shurts. He married Charlotte Lindley on Sept. 12, 1945, at St. Patrick’s Church in Camp Grove, Ill. She preceded him in death on July 16, 2005.
Surviving are his children, Sharon Murphy, Sandra (Ron) Miles, Judy (Dana) Schwiderski, Jean Watkins, Gerald (Robin) Shurts, all of Henry, Joy (Dave) Lander of Fort Myers, Fla., and Bill (Linda) Shurts of Henry; six grandchildren, Julie (Joe) Serpette, Annie Schwiderski, Jen (Andrew) Hicks, Carrie Schwiderski, Ashley Watkins and Brenda Lander; six stepgrandchildren, Danny Brash, Lisa Farmer, David Yocum, Susan Bastion, Jennifer Oltman and Tim Lander; six great-grandsons and four great-granddaughters; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; two sisters, Sherrill McKeever of Peoria and Rebecca (Gene) Taylor of Oswego; and two brothers, Owen “Jim” (Geri) Shurts of Peoria and Ronald (Marian) Shurts of Henry.
His parents; two brothers, Elwin and Bill Shurts; and three sisters, Gloria, Darlene and Mara, preceded him in death.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Henry.
Duane had farmed for several years and was a service manager at R. F. Joliff John Deere in Lacon until his retirement.
Duane served his country in the United States Marines during World War II with the Marine Raiders. He received the Purple Heart with one Gold Star and many other ribbons and medals. He was extremely proud of his service to his country.
He was a member of the Henry American Legion and VFW, 40/8, 6th Marine Division Association, U.S. Marine Raider Association and Military Order of the Purple Heart.
