SHIVELY, ALLEN E.
MT. SUMMITT – Allen Earl “Bud” Shively, 82, of Mt. Summit, died early Friday morning, September 15th, 2006 at his home following an extended illness.
He was born February 3, 1924 in Henry County and was the son of the late James B. and Mary Chambers Shively. He was one of twelve children they raised on a farm called Sleepy Hollow in the Blue River Valley along Highway 36 in northern Henry County.
After Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Allen dropped out of high school to join the Marine Corps. Assigned to a machine gun team, he distinguished himself in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Navy Cross and Purple Heart. After his Pacific tour, he returned home and married his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Jean Beavers, who will be remembered as the librarian for many years at Blue River Valley High School. Allen continued to serve his country as a rifle instructor on Parris Island, South Carolina until the conclusion of WWII. After the war, Allen farmed for a few years and then entered the poultry business—first at Diamond Hatchery in New Castle and later raising broilers and laying hens near New Lisbon. In 1956, he began working in the die shop at the Chrysler Corporation in New Castle. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, making wine, helping in the Rutherford Maple Syrup Camp each spring and mowing for his son’s Trim-a-Lawn mowing business. After a snow storm, Allen would be found plowing snow off the neighbors’ driveways or in the spring and summer, he would take produce from his garden to friends and neighbors. He would often babysit for a stressed mother or take someone for an appointment with a physician. After his wife, Phyllis, passed away in 1983, Allen suffered several years of loneliness. This burden was lifted on July 1st, 2000 when he married Sharon Sharrett, a retired teacher from Blue River Valley. Allen was a devoted member of the Mt. Summit Christian Church and was a Scout leader for many years. He was instrumental in assisting his son, Michael, the first Eagle award and his son, Jeff, earn the first God and Country award for Troop 450 of Mt. Summit.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon (Sharrett) Shively; sons, Michael (wife-Ann) Shively of Utah and Jeff (wife-Connie) Alexander of Muncie; stepsons, Scott (wife-Kelley) Sharrett of Greenwood and Todd (wife-Lisa) Sharrett of Mt. Summit; four brothers, Harry Lloyd (wife-Marietta) of Arizona, Chet (wife-Marilyn) of southern Indiana, Ralph (Whitey) of Mt. Summitcand Dick (wife-Mary Alice) of Nashville, Indiana; two sisters, Ruth Heiny of Noblesville and Mary Lou (husband-Cloyd) Dye of Mt. Summit; a sister-in-law, Norma (husband-Bill) Gates of Anderson; ten grandchildren; and too many cousins, nephews and nieces to count. They also housed several exchange students over the years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Phyllis; three children, David, Thomas and Susan, who died in infancy; two brothers, James (Sunny Jim) and Bob; three sisters, Francis, Marie and Barbara; and his in-laws, Everett and Mable Beavers.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Mt. Summit Christian Church with Reverend Mark O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Summit Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post #137 and the VFW Post #1282.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at the Main & Davis Blue River Funeral Home, Astor Main Chapel and one hour prior to the services at the church on Monday.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Summit Christian Church or the Boy Scout Troop 450 of Mt. Summit. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
