SHIVE, GEORGE W.

George “Jack” William Shive, 80, of Toms River, died Sunday [November 18, 2001] at Community Medical Center, Toms River. He was a building contractor for various businesses and a building inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farmers Home Division, for many years. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II with the [3rd] Raider Battalion in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Lacey, and the Disabled American Veterans. He designed and built a home for paraplegic veterans, the first in the nation and built a home in record time as a radio promotion for radio and television personality Ernie Kovacs. Born in Trenton, he lived in Yardley, Pa., Langhorne, Pa., and the New Egypt section of Plumsted, before moving to Toms River 35 years ago.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Ann Fizzano Shive; three sons, George of Manahawkin, Stafford, John of Bayville, Berkeley, and Joseph of Ocean Gate; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, O’Connell Chapel, 709 Route 9, Bayville. A funeral service will be offered at noon Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Wrightstown.
