SELIG, LAWRENCE E.

Stuttgart—Funeral services for Corporal Lawrence Edwin Selig, USMC, age 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence F. Selig, who was killed in action on Okinawa May 20, 1945, were held at 10 o’clock Saturday morning, April 9, at Holy Rosary Church. The pastor, the Rev. J. G. Evans, officiated at the Requiem High Mass and the Daniel Harder Post of the American Legion had charge of the military ceremony. Music was by the Junior Choir of Holy Rosary School. The Rev. H. J. Heagney, a former pastor, was present in the sanctuary.

Father Evans preached an eloquent and inspiring eulogy to the departed hero, paying fitting tribute to the young Marine for his love of God and country. “He and thousands of other boys like him who laid down their lives in defense of our freedoms,” said Father Evans, “have kept the soul of America alive.”

Corporal Selig enlisted in the Marine Corps in January, 1943, while a student at Arkansas Polytechnic College, Russellville, and received his boot training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He arrived overseas in August, 1943, and saw continuous service as a member of the 3rd Raider Bn. He participated in the campaign of Bougainville, Emirau, Tarawa, Guam and Okinawa.

He was a graduate of Holy Rosary School and a member of the 1942 graduation class of Stuttgart High School, being a member of Delta Sigma fraternity and Catholic Knights of America. His lovable disposition endeared him to all who knew him and his school career was outstanding, for he exemplified all the sterling qualities of a fine Catholic youth.

Former classmates, friends and relatives filled the church to capacity for this final tribute to Corporal Selig. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery, where military honors were conducted at the grave by the Legion firing squad. Rosary services were held Friday night at the Turpin Funeral Home.
