SCHULLER, RAYMOND L.

Raymond L. “Big Ray” Schuller, 85, a gregarious blue-collar worker who helped turn out the vote for Chicago’s Democratic Party for more than three decades, died Friday, Nov. 24 [2000], in the Illinois Veterans Home in Manteno. Mr. Schuller was a member of the U.S. Marine Raiders in World War II. He returned to Chicago after the war and lived primarily on the Southwest Side, where he was a Democratic Party precinct captain and party stalwart in the 14th and 23rd Wards through the 1960s. Mr. Schuller, whose late brother George was a former Chicago fire commissioner, also worked as a clerk for the city’s Streets and Sanitation Department for more than 40 years. “He was so gregarious and would always talk about the people he brought out for Mayor [Richard J.] Daley in the 1960 election. He was so proud of that,” said his son John. “He was a great father, a great neighborhood guy, one of those blue-collar guys who made up what Chicago was during that time.” Survivors include five other sons, Raymond P., Robert A., Mark J., Peter M. and Matthew D.; two daughters, Marybeth Skinner and Juliann Pavelich; and a sister, Lorraine Kwiecinski. Mass will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 5555 W. State Rd., Burbank.
