SCHNEIDER, JOHN J.

Charges are expected to be filed today against John Arthur Kirch in the fatal shooting Sunday [September 7, 1980] of a Winona County deputy sheriff.

Kirch, 32, was arrested at his mobile home in Goodview, Minn., after officer John Schneider and other deputies had been sent there to investigate a domestic dispute, officials said.

Neighbors said that Kirch’s wife left the house with her five-year-old son and called police. Deputies knocked on the door, but Kirch barricaded himself inside with his nine-month-old daughter, neighbors said.

After the officers pried the door open with a crowbar, three shots were fired, the witnesses said. One .22 caliber bullet struck Schneider in the chest and he died a short time later at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.

Schneider, 54, had been a deputy for 22 years and was two years away from retirement.

Court Attorney Julius Gernes said that deputies were still investigating the case yesterday.

Kirch was being held in Winona County Jail.
