SCHMIDT, GEORGE C., JR.

George C. Schmidt, 82, of Virginia Beach, died June 16, 2002, at a Virginia Beach hospital.

Born May 29, 1920, in Galveston, Texas, to the late George Carl and Willie Schmidt, Col. Schmidt served in the United States Marine Corps for 35 years and retired in 1973. He was a member of Baylake United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Texas, a former docent at the Virginia Beach Life Saving Museum and as frequent marshall at the Kingsmill Golf Classic.

He joined the Marine Corps on May 31, 1938. He was commissioned from Officer’s Candidate School in 1943. He served with such units as 2nd Marine Brigade, 2nd Marine Division, 3rd Marine Division and Marine Raiders throughout WWII. After WWII, he served in Marine assignments with extensive background in supply operations. He served in Vietnam and received many citations and Medals including; Vietnam service Medal with 2 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, & organized USMCR Medal.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy C. Schmidt; and three daughters, Marilyn Hyman and her husband Andy of Chapin, SC, Barbara Parker and her husband Chuck of Carrollton, VA, and Janet Sudduth and her husband Preston of Virginia Beach, VA. He is also survived by his brother, Edward W. Schmidt of San Antonio, TX; and seven grandchildren, Rusty Parker and his wife Michele, Eric Parker, Todd Parker, Rebecca Merchant, Laura Merchant, Drew Hyman and his wife Heather, and Loren Hyman.

A funeral service will be conducted at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Bayside Chapel Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. A Graveside service will be held with Military honors Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Davis Corner Rescue Squad.
