SAVAGE, RICHARD N.

Richard Nicholas Savage, Sr., 90, retired employee of Mallory Air Force Base in Memphis and former resident of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, April 9, 2003, at VA Medical Center in Memphis.

Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Dickey Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.

The Charleston, Mississippi, native was the son of the late J. H. Savage and Ella Hughes Savage. He was married to Katherine Overall Savage who preceded him in death on September 5, 1998. Mr. Savage enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and served as rifle sergeant with the [2nd] Raider Battalion in the Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart with Gold Star for wounds suffered in action in Guadalcanal when on patrol duty back of the Japanese lines. He was seriously wounded the second time at Iwo Jima in March 1945 and was medically dismissed from service in January 1946. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and attended the Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Faye (Ray) Vandiver of Columbia; one son, R. N. “Nickey” (Brenda) Savage, Jr. of Mt. Pleasant; one sister, Ruth Saunders of Memphis; five grandchildren, Richard Gene Savage, Timothy Lee Savage, James Michael Savage, Jim Wilhoite, and Brenda Wenk; and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, family, and friends.
