SALOV, JOHN
John Salov, age 77, of Battle Creek died Thursday, October 11, 2001, at the BC VA Medical Center after a long illness.
John was born November 14, 1923 in Sesser, IL to George and Anna (Nevscanin) Salov.
He was raised in Sesser, served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific/Guadalcanal. After the service he came to Battle Creek, then lived in Chicago where he was a 1950 graduate of Coyne Electrical and Radio-Television School.
Since 1953 he has resided in Battle Creek. John was an electronic television and radio repairman and was employed by Knight’s Inc., Ken Shole’s Appliance and TV, The Trading Post and at home he operated Level Park Television and Radio Repair until physical limitations no longer allowed him to work.
He was married in Battle Creek, March 28, 1947, to Margaret G. DeFrain. She preceded him in death July 26, 1981.
Also preceding him in death were four sisters, Bessie Mangiapanello, Emily Salov, Dina Dickey, Mary Bailey and a brother, Frank Salov.
Surviving are three daughters, Janice L. (Ben) Kelly of Battle Creek, Mary E. (Brian) Hirdning of Portage, Julie A. (Buzz) Powers of Marshall; two sons, John M. Salov of Jackson, and George (Nancy) Salov of Richmond, KY; ten grandsons, Sean, Trevor and Tyler Kelly, Robert Hamilton and Austin Hirdning, Jon and Joshua Powers, Coley and Tracy Salov and Kevin Salov; a sister, Amelia Salov of Benton, IL.
He was a charter member of St. Jerome Catholic Church where he was involved in many functions, including the Bingo Program, helping with meals and as bus driver and was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post #298. He was an avid bowler, enjoyed fishing, softball, was a faithful Cub fan and loved spending time with his family.
Friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Saturday 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon and then on Sunday 3:00-6:00 p.m. where a Vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
Fr. Charles H. Fischer will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jerome Catholic Church 10:00 a.m. Monday.
Military honors by the U.S. Marine Honor Guard.
Interment at Memorial Park Cemetery.
