SALERNO, JAMES A.

James A. Salerno died Friday November 25, 2016 at his home in Cedar Knolls. He was 98.

James was born in Summit, NJ a son to the late Rosalia (Acquaviva) and Francesco Salerno.

He was a WWII Sgt for the Carlson Raiders, 5th Marine Division who fought at Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and, Iwo Jima. He received 4 bronze stars, two Presidential Citations, a Silver Star, and a Purple Heart. He is a member of the Marine Corps League, the United States Marine Raider Association, the Military Order of the Purple Heart 246, and the American Legion Slatery Post in Whippany, NJ.

James worked as a general contractor for J.A. Salerno Sr. and Sons Inc.

He is survived by his wife Angela Rose (Stavale) Salerno of 62 years, three sons, James A Salerno Jr., Gregory Salerno, and Michael J. Salerno, his sisters Ann Miller and Dolores Krofeifer, and 5 grandchildren James A. Salerno III, April Marie Salerno, Marisa Ann Salerno, Michael Daniel Salerno, and Ava Paradise Salerno.

Visitation will be Sunday November 27, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Valley Memorial Funeral Home 1012 Valley Rd., Gillette, NJ, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Monday, November 28 at St. Vincent de Paul RC Church, Stirling at 10:00 AM. Entombment will follow at St. Teresa Mausoleum in Summit, NJ.
