Washington, Jan. 13—Among Marines designated to receive the Navy Cross from Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Fleet, for “extraordinary heroism” in an attack on Makin Island in the Pacific last August was Pvt. Donald R. Roberton, missing in action [August 18, 1942], son of Mrs. Juanita Roberton, 916 Main Street, Franklin, La.
Historian’s note: Pvt. Roberton was subsequently captured by the Japanese, taken to Kwajalein and executed on 16 October 1942.
