REED, JOHN J.

John James (Campbell) Reed, age 91 of Munhall, passed away peacefully to our Lord on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Beloved husband of 56 years of the late Rose (Filipovich) Reed. He was born December 10, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA. At age 7, he became the adopted son of James and Margaret Campbell of West Homestead. He grew up on Walnut Street, attended St. Mary Magdelene Elementary School, Calhoun Jr. High School and Homestead Sr. High School. He was part of the winning basketball team of 1939 in Hershey, PA. In December 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. He served in the Pacific Theater and became a member of the Marine Raiders. After his honorable discharge, he settled in the Homestead area, married, and worked for the Union Railroad and the U.S. Postal Service. John is survived by a sister Mary Jane (Campbell) McDonald, three nieces, Margaret Ann, Kathleen and Kelly and their children. John and Rose were proud parents of five children, Timothy (Michelle) Reed of Munhall, Colleen (Jack) Vamos of Munhall, Christine (late Richard) Fuga of West Mifflin, James (Patricia) Reed of Munhall and Kevin (Cathy) Reed of Sterling, VA; eight grandchildren, Bryan (Heather) Schur of Uniontown, Melissa Vamos of Baltimore, MD, Elizabeth (Keith) Williams of West Newton, Amy Vamos of Swissvale, Susan (Jonathan) Gordon of Munhall, Mandy (Alexis) Vamos of North Beach, MD, Christopher Reed of Falls Church, VA and Josh Reed of Sterling VA.; and five great-grandchildren, Michael Reed, Abigael, Audrey and Alesha Williams and Brooke Gordon. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Filipovich and Dorothy Filipovich of VA, brother-in-law Frank (Madeline) Filipovich of NC, as well as many nieces and nephews.
