REED, DONALD V.

Donald V. Reed, 74, of 1461 40th St. NE, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, in St. Luke’s Hospital after a short illness. Services: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories, by Dr. Robert Bouton. Entombment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home and after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; s son, Kim and wife Laura of Cedar Rapids; and a daughter, Joni Reed Cooley and husband Bill of Laurel, Md. Also surviving are two grandsons, Jesse and Dakota Reed.

Don was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Boone, the son of James and Marie Lindeman Reed. He married Marilyn P. Harrington on Nov. 23, 1945, in Cedar Falls. Don pitched in the St. Louis Cardinals baseball farm system from 1941 to 1942 until the age of 18, when he enlisted in the Marine Corps. He volunteered for the Marine Raiders and served with the Raiders in the South Pacific until he was severely wounded on Bougainville Island in the Solomon Islands in November 1943. He was a graduate of Drake University and a 28-year employee of Rockwell Collins, from which he retired as manager of contracts and pricing in 1985. Don was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Disabled American Veterans and the Marines Association.

Don loved his wife and family, his country, the Marine Raiders, the New York Yankees, “good” music and golf.
