PHILLIPS, JOHNNIE W.
A memorial service was held November 19 from Hillcrest Baptist Church for Johnnie Wardell Phillips of 323 Sykes Rd.
Phillips, 69, died November 17 [1988] at the Veterans Administration Hospital.
A native of Laurel, Phillips had lived in Jackson for the past 20 years, coming from Braxton. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard, the Navy and Marines.
Phillips was a member of the National Guard NCO, U.S. Marine Raider Association, U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association and Disabled American Veterans Association life member.
Phillips was the first male LPN to graduate from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, the Leavell Woods Masonic Lodge No. 626 and the Eastern Star No. 375.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Jean Phillips of Jackson; sons, Merritt Paxton Phillips of Jackson and Kenneth Allen Phillips of Big Timber, Mont.; brother, Willie Phillips of Greer’s Ferry, Ark.; sisters, Mary Lou Meeks of Heber Springs, Ark., Lucy Ann Weeks of Jackson and Mavis Coltraine of Glendale, Calif.; and several grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Friends of Alcoholics, Hillcrest Baptist Church building fund or the American Heart Association.
