PEEPLES, LARRY I.

Larry Peeples, administrative assistant to Washington Gov. Arthur Langlie in the 1950s and winner of the Silver Star, died March 30 [1990] at his home in Del Mar near San Diego. He was 65.

A memorial service is planned in May at the family cemetery at Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island.

Mr. Peeples, a retired director of public affairs for Rohr Industries, was completing a book on Rohr at the time of his death.

During his career at Rohr, he was active in the aerospace industry’s Public Affairs Council, the group that helped steer the public relations efforts of the nation’s defense contractors.

Mr. Peeples was a native of Seattle and was senior class president at Ballard High School when he enlisted in the Marine Corps Dec. 26, 1941.

As a sergeant with the 2nd Armored Amphibious Battalion, he earned the Silver Star for Gallantry on Iwo Jima and won the Bronze Star during combat on Saipan. He also received the Purple Heart as a result of shrapnel wounds on Saipan.

Mr. Peeples didn’t receive the certificates and medals until special ceremonies in October 1984.

After his discharge at the end of World War II, he enrolled at the University of Washington and received his bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1948.

Mr. Peeples later worked for several newspapers in this state, including the Post-Intelligencer, until he was recalled to active duty by the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He served in a training unit at Camp Pendleton.

He was active in many organizations in San Diego, including United Fund, YMCA and Boy Scouts. He served on the board of Junior Achievement of San Diego, the San Diego Traffic Safety Council and the Association of Industrial Advertisers.

Mr. Peeples was a past president of the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Military Affairs Committee of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce.

He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Arthritis Foundation and a board member of Bay Hospital Medical Center. He also was a member of the board of San Diego Partnership in Education and of the Taxpayers Association.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; three children, Karen Meyer, Lizbeth Enbysk and Douglas Peeples; and a stepdaughter, Barbara Joan Layman.
