PEACOCK, JOHN E. D.

John E. D. Peacock, 96, of Indianapolis, IN, died December 18, 2015. He was born January 8, 1919, in Flushing, New York to Walter W. Peacock and Hazel Dean (Wood) Peacock. John grew up in Longmeadow, MA and graduated from Worcester Academy in 1936 and Dartmouth College in 1940. After graduation he entered the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant, retiring as a major in 1945. During that time he served in Cuba, Guadalcanal and Quantico, VA.

In 1943 he married Sylvia Griffith after a whirlwind two-week courtship. They were married 67 years, until Sylvia’s death in 2010. In 1945 they moved to Indianapolis and together they raised three children who survive him: John E. D. Peacock, Jr. (Sally), Holly Peacock and Alexander G. Peacock.

He is also survived by five grandchildren: Morgan Coleman (Andrew), Reagan W. Young, Trevor G. Young, Mary Josephine Peacock and Alexander G. Peacock, Jr. and two great-grandchildren: John Peacock Coleman and Margaret Moses Coleman.

John enjoyed 28 years with L S Ayres & Co. in various management positions followed by several years as personnel director of the Indianapolis Department of Public Safety. He served as president of the Ayres Foundation and was a volunteer for the Executive Service Corps. As a result, he made many connections with Indianapolis area non-profit organizations, which he considered to be the backbone of the Indianapolis community. John always said he learned much more from them than he was able to give back. In his recent years at Marquette Manor, John volunteered in the gift store and library and enjoyed reviewing books for the residents.

Memorial contributions may be directed in his memory to Gleaners Food Bank, 3737 Waldemere Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46241. Private graveside services will be held in Crown Hill Cemetery at a later date. Crown Hill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
