SALEM, Dec. 24 – PFC Eugene W. Malick Pace of the U.S. Marine Corps was killed in action [November 9, 1943] according to a telegram received yesterday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Pace of 517 East Main Street. The telegram was from the U.S. Navy Department but did not give any details as to where or when PFC Pace was killed. His parents stated that they knew he was serving in the southwest Pacific.
PFC Pace would have graduated from Salem Community High School last May but was enlisted in the Marines last February 24. He was shipped overseas duty last May.
Salem – Funeral services for Pfc. Eugene W. Malick Pace, U.S. Marine Corps, 18, who was killed in action Nov. 9, 1943, on Bougainville, Solomon Islands, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July Fourth at the Presbyterian Church, Rev. Garretson officiating. He is the son of John W. Malick Jr. of St. Louis and Mrs. Claude Pace of Salem. His grandfather is John W. Malick, Senior of Centralia and grandmother Mrs. Emily Beasley of Kell, Ill.
Pfc. Pace attended Salem Community High School and would have graduated with the class of ’43. He enlisted Feb. 5, 1943 at Chicago and was assigned to active duty the same day. He served in New Caledonia from July 25 to October the 7th of ’43 with the 3rd Raider Battalion. He had gone overseas in June and was killed in action Nov. 9, 1943. He joined Presbyterian Church here just before leaving for active duty.
The body will arrive Saturday, July 3 by B. and O. and will be taken to a local funeral home to lie in state until Sunday afternoon. Amvets will have charge of the military service; burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
