PACE, CARL B.

Pvt. Gene W. Watmore, 24, and Sgt. [Carl] Basil Pace, 25, Geneva Marines fighting on Iwo Jima, have both been killed in action, relatives have been informed.

The Marines attended school together, and later were brothers-in-law.

Private Watmore, in service since May, 1944, was killed February 27. He was sent overseas last November. He is survived by his wife, the former Delores Pace of Geneva, now of Lincoln; his daughter, Jacqueline Jean, nine months old; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Watmore; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Maier and Mrs. Jim Matjeka, all of Geneva; and two brothers, Steve and Bill, both serving overseas.

Sergeant Pace was killed March 7 [1945]. Entering the service in 1939, he served one year in Iceland and two years overseas with Col. Carlson’s Raiders before returning to the state March, 1944. Last August he again left for overseas to fight his sixth major battle at Iwo Jima.

Surviving Sgt. Pace are his mother, Mrs. Edna Pace, formerly of Geneva, now of Lincoln; a sister, Mrs. Delores Watmore, Lincoln; and a brother, Sgt. Tommy Pace, a paratrooper now overseas His fiancé, Patricia Bailey, lives in Lincoln.

Memorial services were held Monday at the Congregational Church at Geneva.
