MOYER, RICHARD L.
Richard L. Moyer, 93, formerly of Newark, DE, passed away at his residence in Hockessin on Sunday, April 17, 2016.
Dick was born in East Earl Township, PA, son of the late Elmer and Carrie (Coleman) Moyer. He graduated from Lebanon High School in 3 years and began his studies with Wyomissing PolyTech before enlisting with the United States Marine Corps in 1942. Dick served honorably in WWII, as a member of Edson’s Raiders battalion, fighting in the battles of Tulagi and Guadalcanal. After his discharge at Camp Pendleton in CA, Dick married Janet Tetlow in Beverly Hills, CA. He went on to earn his engineering degree from Penn State University. Upon graduation, he went to work for the DuPont Company in South Carolina, returned to Delaware to teach mechanical engineering at the University of Delaware and then ultimately went to work for Hercules, Inc. retiring in 1977.
Dick and Janet enjoyed traveling, especially taking summer vacations to their home that he built in Avalon, NJ, where Dick enjoyed sailing his 16-foot Flying Dutchman, The Arrow. He enjoyed countless hours teaching his sons to sail and taking his grandchildren for grand tours of the back bays. Dick was a passionate surf fisherman. As a member of the Avalon Fishing Pier, he spent many a fall morning and evening angling for bluefish. He stayed active with his interest in machinery and above all else was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Although he lead a rich life full of accomplishments, his finest accomplishment was being an extraordinary father to David and Stephen. He built football goal posts for the local park so the kids could enjoy real football and kick the ball between the uprights. The backyard was transformed into a basketball court complete with a homemade rebounding workout machine. He drove the family across the USA so they could see the wonders of Yellowstone, the Grand Tetons and the Grand Canyon. Above all he exemplified the values of giving, caring and sharing, that live on through his family today.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Janet; his children, David M. (Gretchen, deceased) and Stephen C. Moyer (Erika); his grandchildren, Stefanie (Derek Hodgson) and Aaron Moyer; his great-grandson, Liam Hodgson; and his sister, Dorothy Peterson.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Moyer; and his sister, Betty Bachman.
Dick’s family would like to thank Dr. David Maged and his staff for the compassionate care extended to him over the years.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:30am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
