MEARS, DWAYNE E.

Captain Dwayne E. Mears, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion G. Mears, 1916 East California Avene, died February 20, 1945, of wounds received in action on Iwo Island according to a message from Lieutenant General A. A. Vandegrift, commandant of the United States Marine Corps. Captain Mears is also survived by a brother, Second Lieutenant Vernon G. Mears of the Army Air Forces at Fort Worth, Texas. Captain Mears had 10 months duty on Guadalcanal and returned to the states for a 30-day leave in June, 1943. He was an alumnus of Bakersfield High School and Junior College and College of Pacific. He was graduated at Quantico, Va., Marine Reserve officers’ school. He had a bachelor of arts degree in economics and was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi fraternity.
