MCBRIDE, GERALD L.

Gerald “Jerry” McBride died Saturday [May 17, 2003] at his residence in Sonora. He was 77.

Born in Bradford, Ohio, he relocated to Sonora in 1929 with his parents, Russell and Etoile, and brother, Carl. He attended elementary school in Standard and graduated from Sonora High School in 1943.

He served in the Marines during World War II as a “Raider” and marksman for two years. He was a survivor of Iwo Jima and watched the flag being raised there.

After moving to Sonora from Redding in 1957 with his wife and three sons, he worked in the logging industry for several years. He owned and operated a carpet-cleaning business before retiring from a long disability.

Mr. McBride is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bonita “Bonnie” McBride of Sonora; three sons, Morris McBride and Sam McBride, both of Sonora, and Rex McBride of Modesto; a daughter and son-in-law, Mariann and Justin Coyle of Sonora; a sister, Phyllis Mayfield of Fresno; two brothers, Robert McBride of Sonora, and Carl McBride of Easley, S.C.; and five grandchildren, Tanya and Tiffany McBride, both of Sonora, Rachel and Aubry McBride, and Heidi Elder and her husband, Nathan, all of St. George, Utah.

A graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Mountain Shadow Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 1710 Gilbreth Road, Burlingame 94010, or Veterans of Foreign Wars, 9 N. Washington, Sonora 95370. Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
