MARTEL, ALPHONSE A.
Joseph Alphonse “Al” Martel, 79, of Houston, died peacefully in his own home on March 3, 2002. Al was born September 8, 1922 in Lakeport, New Hampshire. He was a veteran of World War II, serving six years as a U.S. Marine Corps Raider and as a Sergeant with the 5th Marine Division. Al bravely fought in both Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal, and received the Purple Heart and Unit Citation. He and his wife came to Texas after the war and Al worked for 34 years at Armco Steel Co., in Houston. He was a long time member of the BPOE Elks Lodge. Al is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Maude J.”Billie” Martel. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Sally J. and David L. Koenig of Houston; daughter, Jennifer A. Manis and granddaughters Jamie Kay and Jodie Marie Manis also of Houston; sisters, Julie Monahan, Theresa Orpin and Francis Guyer of New Hampshire and many nieces, nephews and cousins and friends. Services are 10:00 a.m. today, March 7, 2002 at the Carter Funeral Chapel with Father Steve Zigrang officiating. Mr Martel will be laid to rest in Houston National Cemetery.
