MANTE, ANDREW C.

Andrew C. Mante of Pleasantville, NY and Cape Cod MA died on Friday, February 21, 2014 at the age of 91. He is survived by his wife Catherine (nee Mitchell) of 63 years and his 5 children Andrew (Donna) of Longmeadow MA, William (Dawn) of Port Orange, FL, Paul (Debbie) of Surfside, SC, Carol (Kevin Leonard) of Pleasantville, NY, and Peter (Michele) of Palisades NY. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Sr. Mary Christella, RSM and Marie Anderson and many loving nieces and nephews. He was a member of the New York City Police Department for 35 years and he retired as a detective in 1985.

Mr. Mante was born and raised in Riverdale, NY. He was predeceased by his parents Adele and Andrew, and his siblings June Squires and Bruce Mante. He was attending Villanova College and had been recruited to play baseball with the Detroit Tigers when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the outbreak of WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater. When he returned from the war, he married Catherine Mitchell at the Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart. Together they raised 5 children in Yonkers, where he was an active member in youth sports programs and parish activities at Christ the King Church.

“Grandpa” as he was lovingly called, was a friend to many over the years. He was a collector of stories and he loved to share them with all. He was actively involved with the Cardinal Spellman Retreat House in Riverdale NY for 15 years. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and spending time with his family on Cape Cod. He made many friends along the way and he will be missed by all.

Visitation will be Monday 2-4 & 7-9pm at Beecher Flooks Funeral Home, Inc., Pleasantville. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday 10 am at Holy Innocents Church, Pleasantville.
