MAHER, ARTHUR R.

HANOVER TWP. – Arthur R. Maher, who received many decorations during World War II, died Thursday [July 12, 1984] at Morristown Memorial Hospital after a short illness. He was 63.

He was born in Paterson and lived in Whippany and Cedar Knolls all his life.

Mr. Maher was a truck driver for the Whippany Paper Board Trucking Co. for 30 years and for the Imperial Container Corp. in Newark for five years.

He was a World War II Marine gunnery sergeant, serving with the 2nd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He served in Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Saipan, receiving the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts and a Presidential Unit Citation.

Mr. Maher was a charter member of the Marine Corps League, Robert J. Slattery detachment, Whippany and Cedar Knolls. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5351 in Whippany; the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 69; the Second Marine Division Association; and the Church of Christ, Whippany.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; a son, Kenneth, Cedar Knolls; two daughters, Judith Harrington, Cedar Knolls, and Joan Dillon, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and three grandchildren.
