Lloyd David Luke of Lynden WA, died on July 22, 1996 in Bellingham WA following a long illness.  He was born on January 20, 1920 to Henry and Mary (Marquart) Luke in Marble, MN where he spent his youth.  He graduated from Greenway H.S. in Coleraine MN.  He served in the Marine Corps from January 1942 – January 1946 with the Fifth Division in Col. Evan J. Carlson’s Raider Battalion in the South Pacific where he saw significant action.   He is honored for his heroic service on the Memorial Wall at the Eden Prairie War Memorial in Eden Prairie, MN.

He received his bachelor of science degree in 1951 from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter MN and was a star on the swimming team.

Mr. Luke married Janet Carter on January 3, 1953 in St. Peter.  He received a master of arts degree in 1954 from Colorado State College of Education in Greely, CO.

Mr. Luke taught and coached all sports at Villard High School in Villard, MN from 1951- 1954.  He taught physical education and coached swimming from 1951 – 1974 in the Winona public school system in Winona, MN.  In 1970 he was elected president of the MN Swim Coaches Association and in 1981 was inducted into the MN Swim Coaches Hall of Fame.

He was a resident of Lynden WA for the last nine years of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters Julie and husband Scott Doan and Cindy and special friend Mark Summearll, two grandchildren and brother, Elmer, of Minnetonka, MN.  He was preceded in death by parents Henry and Mary; three brothers Fred, John and Donny and four sisters, Eleanor Kikertz, Grace McCarty, Blanche Luke and Mary Luke.

Mr. Luke’s ashes were spread on Twin Lakes, located in his home town of Marble, MN.
