LAYNE, EDWARD E.
Edward “Ed” Eugene Layne, 89, of Fremont, died Thursday, September 5, 2013, at Nye Legacy in Fremont.
Edward was born March 7, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan. Ed grew up in Rockwood, Tennessee with his beloved mother, Nora, his stepfather, Bruce Kirkland, and his siblings. In 1942, Edward enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and became a member of the prestigious Marine Raider Corps. He fought in the South Pacific at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. Serving as a Marine was one of the proudest periods of his life.
On December 28, 1943, Edward married the love of his life, Evelyn Geneva Easter, who he had known since childhood. From this union, they had two daughters, Marty and Rosemary. He never failed to tell them how much he loved them and appreciated them.
Edward studied at the University of Tennessee in the field of metallurgy, and in 1949 he began working at the Atomic Energy Plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In 1951, the family moved to Washington, D.C., where Edward worked at the Naval Research Laboratory. His career eventually took him to Dallas, Texas where he was employed at Texas Instruments, and in, 1994, he retired as Vice-President of Precision Cables. In 2002, Edward and Geneva moved to Fremont to be closer to their family.
Edward was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved to cook and entertain friends and family. His favorite place to vacation for many years was South Padre Island, where his children and grandchildren could spend time with “Nannie and Papaw.” Church was always an important part of his life, and he taught his children the significance of having God and prayer in their lives. He was a kind man. He often said “it doesn’t cost a dime more to be nice to people,” and wherever he went, everyone loved him. He always told people how much he loved them and appreciated them and wanted people to know how important they were to him.
Edward was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fremont, a 60 year member of the Masonic Lodge, and the Marine Raider Association.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Edith Daniels, brothers Paul Layne, J.C. Kirkland, and Vernal Kirkland, grandson, Jamie Martin, and many family members who were so important to him.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Geneva, daughters Rosemary (Daniel) Martin, Marty (Winfield) Weber, all of Fremont; grandchildren Eva (Curtis) Wilson, of Austin, Texas; Susan Martin, of San Francisco, California; Saundra Mohnsen, of Omaha, Nebraska; Wendy Weber, of Bethesda, Maryland; Mandy (Seth) Hengelfelt, of Stromsburg, Nebraska; Mitch (Nicole) Weber, of Omaha, Nebraska; great-grandchildren Carley, Emily, and Lexie Wilson, Maddisen Mohnsen, Wyatt and Sydney Hengelfelt; sisters-in-law Faye Cooley, Wanda Bullard, Shirley Thomas, Teresa McCluen, Joyce Kirkland, Jo Kirkland, Margaret Easter and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family of Ed would like to graciously acknowledge the loving care and outstanding service provided by the staff at Nye Legacy.
Funeral Service will be Tuesday, September 10, 2013, 10:30 A.M., at First Baptist Church in Fremont. Visitation will be Monday, September 9, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 with family present from 6-8. A memorial has been established to First Baptist Church.
