KENNEDY, ROBERT D.
Robert D. Kennedy, 84, of Leominster, and Ormond Beach, Fla., died Saturday night, July 13 [2002], in Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, of complications following heart surgery.
He was born July 16, 1917 in Chicopee Falls, the son of Daniel F. and Josephine (Shea) Kennedy. He had summered in Leominster for the past eight years. He graduated from Chicopee High School in 1935 and received a bachelor’s degree in 1939 and a master’s degree in 1940, both from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.
Mr. Kennedy served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 30 years, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1967. During World War II, he served with the Third Marine Division in the Pacific. His later duty stations included Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C., Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, the Naval War College in Newport, R.I., the U.S. European Command in Paris, France, and many others.
After retiring from the Marines, he was deputy warden of the Maine State Prison in Thomaston and later worked as an administrator for the Maine Department of Corrections before retiring to Florida in 1978.
Mr. Kennedy attended St. Anna’s Church in Leominster and Saint Brendan Church in Ormond Beach. He was a member of the Military Order of the World Wars.
He leaves a son, William P. Kennedy of New York City; three daughters, Joan Kennedy of Farmington, Conn., Janet Kennedy of Shirley and Anne K. King of Leominster; a brother, Paul T. Kennedy of Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Mary K. Deutschman of Parkton, Md.; and three grandchildren
His wife of 46 years, Andrea (Peterson) Kennedy, died on July 11, 1993.
The funeral will be held Friday from the Silas F. Richardson & Son Funeral Home, 106 West St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anna’s Church, 194 Lancaster St.
Burial will be at a later date in Saint Patrick’s Cemetery in Chicopee.
