JONES, JOHN W.

Master Sergeant John W. Jones, Marine Corps veteran of Pacific campaigns during World War II and of subsequent fighting during the Korean War, died suddenly at his home here Sunday evening [May 2, 1960].

Stationed on active duty with the Marine Corps recruiting office here, Sgt. Jones had been a member of the Corps for 20 years. He served with the Raider Battalion during World War II and was in Korea during 1950-51.

Sgt. Jones was born in Galesburg, Ill., Jan. 6, 1919.

Eight years ago he had opened the recruiting office here in Chico and three years later was transferred to Japan. He then was moved to Hawaii where he was joined by his wife, Marjorie, and where he was stationed two years prior to being transferred to Camp Pendleton.

Two years ago Sgt. Jones was re-assigned to the Chico duty-station.

Jones was a former member of Chico Aerie No. 218, FOE, and was also a former member and charter member of the Elks Club of Hayward.

In July of 1953 he and Mrs. Marjorie Kettinger, of Sacramento, were married.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. L. P. Stanley, of Garden Grove; Mrs. Edna Hiestand, of Berkeley; Mrs. Ruth Venable, of Garden Grove; Frank Jones, of Florida, and Ralph Jones, of El Segundo.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Funeral services will be conducted in the chapel of the Brusie Funeral Home Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
