JONES, GEORGE R.

George Richard Jones, 88, of Cheyenne passed away September 11, 2013 in Cheyenne.

George was born July 14, 1925, in Lawrence, Kan., moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, as a youth and graduated from Fort Collins High School. He was involved in sports and was President of the athletic club.

George then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the South Pacific during World War II as a member of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion. He received the Purple Heart on the island of Okinawa and saw action in Guam, Emirau and Okinawa, and was in the first occupational force landing in Japan.

George worked for Laramie County School District 1 at Johnson Junior High, McCormick Junior High, and retired from Cheyenne’s East High as assistant principal. He coached football and loved working with the youth.

George is survived by his wife, Beatrice; son, Jack Jones (Cheryl); four grandchildren, Jessica, Melissa, Cassandra and Clint; and three great-grandchildren, Avery, Aspen and Levi.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bernice Jones.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center.

Cremation has taken place at Cheyenne Memorial Gardens.
