HUTCHISON, JOHN A.

John Anglin Hutchison, 72, beloved husband, devoted father and grandfather, and faithful friend, died at the Waldo County General Hospital, Aug. 2, 1995, after a lengthy illness. He was born in St. Francis, May 13, 1923, one of 12 children of Henry B. and Marie T. (Cormier) Hutchison. He was educated in Maine, Connecticut and Massachusetts. He earned his commercial pilot wings and instructor license. John served with distinction as a Marine Raider First and Third Battalion of Guadalcanal, Guam, Okinawa [Shima], Bougainville and [Ryukyu] Islands from 1942 to 1945. During tours of duty, he received many medals and commendations for bravery and leadership from the commanding general of the Fleet Marine Force in the Pacific, Roy S. Geiger. John graduated from the Harvard Criminal Justice Academy and enlisted in the Maine State Police in 1950. He served with the State Police in Frenchville, Madawaska, Skowhegan, Thomaston, Gardiner and Richmond. He retired as a troop commander of Interstate 95 and Turnpike in 1970. He then became police chief in Winslow from 1971 to 1974 and Belfast from 1975 to 1976. He left police work and became treasurer of Robbins Lumber Co. from 1973 to 1983, retiring due to ill health. John was a longtime communicant of St. Francis of Assisi; a member and past president of the Secular Franciscans; a member of the American Legion, VFW, the Retired Maine State Police, DAV, Police Chiefs of Maine, the U.S. Marine Raider Association and the Knights of Columbus. John’s hobbies included boating, flying, camping, woodworking and crafts. He is survived by his loving wife, Dolores (Veilleux) Hutchison; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonny R. and David R. Houston, PhD; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger S. PhD and Lisa Hutchison, Marc B. and Cyndi Hutchison; seven grandchildren, Vanessa D. and Christopher R. Houston, Sean S. and Kristen A. Hutchison, Jeremiah, Jedidiah and Sadie Hutchison; two sisters, Janet and brother-in-law, John Christenson of Burlington, N.J., Evelyn Quellette of Waterville; a brother and sister-in-law, Norman and Marie Hutchison of Waterville and Florida; several beloved nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Norman Vigue, Ray Vigue and his wife, Shirley, Noel Vigue and his wife, Theresa; two sisters-in-law, Sr. Marcelle Veilleux and Adeline Veilleux. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Rackliffe Funeral Home, 22 Church St., Belfast. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 4, 1995, at St. Francis of Assisi, Court Street, Belfast, with the Rev. Ray Richards, celebrant. Interment will be in Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. The family suggests donations be made to either the Hospice Unit of the Waldo County General Hospital, P.O. Box 287, Belfast 04915-0287; or to a charity of one’s choice.
