HUNT, WILFRED A.

Edson Raider, WWII Vet Wilfred “Bill” Hunt, age 83, died peacefully on September 10, 2003 in the San Diego Hospice, after a long battle with several cancers and other health issues.

Bill was born in Brooklyn, NY, on April 11, 1920 and grew up in the Red Hook section of the borough. Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1940 and served with distinction throughout the war with the 1st Marine Raider Battalion, also known as “Edson’s Raiders.” Bill, through his heroic actions, was responsible for saving the lives of several of his fellow Marines during the battle of Guadalcanal and was awarded both the Navy and Army Silver Stars and the Navy Cross for his courage and leadership.

After the war, Bill married his wife of 56 years, the former Una Woods. Together they moved to Long Island, New York and raised 4 children. Bill worked for the Pinter Bros. Trucking Company and was very involved with St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Shore. After retiring, Bill and Una moved to San Diego in 1980. Bill continued his lifelong practice of volunteering, this time at the Christian Closet (St. Vincent de Paul) at Holy Family Parish in Linda Vista and with the Share program. He leaves behind the many friends who were aided by his unselfish devotion to those in need and his ever present sense of humor.

Bill is survived by his wife, Una Hunt; their children, Kevin (Sally) Hunt of Northborough, Mass; Marianne Hunt of Dolan Springs, AZ; Noreen (Dan Lanzer) Hunt and Loretta (Patrick) Landholt of San Diego; grandchildren Aaron and Anita Lanzer; Alison and Sean Landholt; his sister, Mary Friel of Parlin, New Jersey, nieces and a nephew. A Memorial Mass will be held Saturday, September 13, 2003 at 11:00 am at Holy Family Church. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
