HUMMEL, HARLAN E.

BUSHNELL, IL – Harlan E. Hummel, age 87, of Ocala, FL, formerly of Bushnell, IL, passed away on February 7, 2012 in Florida.

Harlan was born on January 1, 1925 in Bushnell, IL to Granville and Beulah Ohlmarht Hummel. He married Mary Patricia Mallon in Bushnell on February 1, 1947. She survives.

He is also survived by two sons, Gene Hummel of Heathrow, FL, Greg (Susan) Hummel of Normal, IL, one daughter, Connie Gastler of Edina, MN, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Barbara Robinson and one daughter, Beverly Haffner.

Harlan attended school in Bushnell and graduated from high school at the age of 16. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 when he turned 17. He spent two years in the Solomon Islands as a Marine Raider then returned to attend college under the V12 program, graduating from the University of Illinois in 1948.

Harlan returned to active duty for the Korean Conflict in 1950 and was discharged as a first lieutenant in 1952.

Harlan joined Hummel Construction while a student at the University of Illinois and later purchased and operated the company for 26 years. He was a very active member of the community serving on the school board, as a director at Farmers & Merchants State Bank, and as a founding member of the Bushnell Lions Club. A Memorial
